The borerging worm reaches the body from an infestation caused by the larvae of the Cochliomyia hominivorax fly, which feed on the living tissue of mammals, according to official information.
This plague represents a serious threat to the health of livestock and, in some cases, can also affect humans.
If someone is infected, they can have large and suppurant wounds, with a serosanguinolento runoff and a characteristic smell of rotten meat. At the bottom of these wounds, it is possible to find grouped larvae, which indicates severe infestation.
Infestations can hinder larval sampling, especially in wounds with reduced opening, such as nostrils or genital areas.
Without adequate treatment, myiasis can be deadly within two weeks, with morbidity in newborns of up to 90% in endemic regions.
