The Ministry of Health announced the creation of the Rio Doce Special Health Program, with an investment of R $ 12 billion for actions directed to the population affected by the breach of the Fundão dam in Mariana, Minas Gerais, in 2015. The episode is considered the The country’s largest socio -environmental disaster with mining tailings dams.
At the time, more than 62 million cubic meters of ore tailings in the environment were dumped. The mud covered more than 600 kilometers along the Doce River until it flowed into the mouth on the coast of Espírito Santo. Nineteen people died.
According to the portfolio, the Rio Doce Special Health Program covers 11 municipalities of Espírito Santo and 38 from Minas Gerais and is the result of the judicial agreement for full and definitive reparation, approved by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) at the end of last year.
The forecast is that R $ 3.6 billion of this total will be intended for policies and actions of direct competence of the Ministry of Health, the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo and the affected municipalities. The other R $ 8.4 billion will compose a perpetual patrimonial fund in order to ensure the continuity of actions to improve collective health in these municipalities.
Seven lines of expertise in the health sector are planned: expansion and improvement of care services; Expansion of the area infrastructure; improvements in health management practices; Intelligence and data science actions; Teaching, Research and Innovation; Community communication and community engagement and strengthening social control.
The lines cover expansion and implementation of multiprofessional teams; Construction, expansion and reform of health units and strengthening of health surveillance (epidemiological, environmental, worker and sanitary), specialized care network and psychosocial care.
The program will consist of the Technical Chamber and the Tripartite Special Committee (CET). The Chamber will act in the formulation and planning and control of proposals for the execution of the program. It will be up to CET to approve the proposals of the Chamber. These instances will be composed of representatives of the Ministry of Health, State Health Departments, affected municipalities and social control.

Minas Gerais: Aimorés, Alpercata, Long Bar, Belo East, Bom Jesus do Galho, Bugre, Caratinga, Advisor Pena, Colonel Fabriciano, New Stream, Dionysus, Fernandes Tourinho, Galilee, Governor Valadares, Iapa, Ipaba, Ipatinga, Itueta, Mariana, Marliéria, In that, Ouro Preto, Parakeet, Pingo D’Agua, Ponte Nova, Raul Soares, Resplendor, Rio Casca, Rio Doce, Santa Cruz do Escalvado, Santana do Paraíso, Sao Domingos do Prata, Sao Jose do Goiabal, São Pedro dos Ferros, without fish, Sobralia, Timothy and Tumiritinga.
