The Director General of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, said Thursday that there is no “alternative” to an agreement to get Argentina out of its spiral of inflation and poverty.
“Our main focus is to get Argentina off this very dangerous path of high inflation,” he told reporters.
Last week, Argentina and the IMF announced that they had reached an understanding to renegotiate a debt of US$44.5 billion in exchange for a reduction in the public accounts deficit, but they still have to continue negotiating.
“Let’s focus on reaching an agreement and then sticking to it,” Georgieva said, because without it, she said, poverty would increase, especially among children.
“What is the alternative? The alternative is nothing,” he said. “Our team is very focused on getting what’s best for the country, with the country.” Georgieva declined to speculate on what would happen if the Argentine Congress rejected the deal.
