Head of Juan José Santivañez's cabinet of advisors resigns from his position in the Ministry of the Interior

Walter Zegarra Figueroa presented his resignation from the position of Chief of Staff of Advisors of the Ministry of the Interior through a letter addressed to Minister Juan José Santiváñez. In the document he did not reveal the reasons for his decision, but La República sources commented that Santiváñez has requested the resignation of all advisors of his ministerial cabinet, which could be related to the departure of Zegarra and other officials from the portfolio.

“This letter serves to inform you my resignation from the position of Chief of Staff designated by Ministerial Resolution No. 0790-2024-IN, dated June 13, 2024. Likewise, I present to you my consideration and enormous gratitude for the trust granted, during the time I worked at the Ministry of the Interior,” reads the letter.

The resignation and replacement of Zegarra Figueroa must be informed through a resolution and published in the Official Gazette El Peruano. This situation occurs amid questions about the performance of Juan José Santiváñez in the face of the citizen insecurity crisis facing the country, which is why He also offered his continuity in office as Minister of the Interior if the state of emergency—decreed for some districts of Lima and Callao—was not successful.

Santiváñez would take ‘a step aside’ if the state of emergency does not work

On September 27th, Juan José Santiváñez Antúnez spoke about the problems of extortion and crime that affect the countrywhere he suggested that, if he did not obtain positive results from his plan, could resign from his position as head of the Ministry. “I am convinced that the state of emergency must work, and if it does not, I will have to step aside,” said Santiváñez.

However, in a recent press conference of the Council of Ministers, he was consulted about the effectiveness of the imposed measure and his possible resignation. In this regard, Santiváñez pointed out that at the end of this period it would be President Boluarte who evaluates her permanence in officedespite the fact that he had previously stated that he would make the decision if results were not achieved. The state of emergency that was implemented will last 60 days, during which results are expected to be achieved.

Despite this, on Friday, October 11, the leaders of the transport unions called on all unions in the country to carry carry out a national strike. The objective of this mobilization is to put pressure on the Legislature to repeal Law 32108 and archive the Urban Terrorism Law. Due to the perception of inaction on the part of the Executive and Legislative in the fight against extortion and contract killings that puts them in danger daily.
