The Maldonado City Hall asked the resignation of Jeanette Perdomo, the technician who was going to be in charge of giving the workshops to women for gender violence after lying in some figures in which she said that 60% of women were violent, they informed The Observer sources of the Administration.
To promote the workshop, the Municipality had published the following on its website: “60% of women in our country are being marked as violent and 30% of men, between 25 and 45 years old, have committed suicide because they did not dare to denounce violence.”, La Diaria had reported. Hours later, that publication was deleted after learning that the figures were not officialconfirmed to The Observer, sources of the Administration.
Perdomo had acknowledged to La Diaria that the statistics were based on the “did you find out about” or “did you know who”. “Do you think that all women speak where they have to speak? Or than all men?”he told that newspaper.
“They question me about a percentage, let’s forget the percentages, because statistics come and go. If we don’t test the real woman… There are cases where it is said that screams are heard next door and the man is being mistreated and does not dare to talk,” he added.
The need for the workshop, according to Perdomo, arose from “comments” they heard on the street from small and large mothers, who have suffered the situation of being separated both from their partners and from their children and from their elderly parents, companions work and children”. “What is happening for that matriarchy, for that mother, for that partner, for that lady? And it is that he is exercising violence and the consequence is serious, “he told La Diaria.
This Thursday the Municipality of Maldonado issued a statement in which it affirms that it “does not share” “the way in which the statements were expressed and the figures handled without the corresponding support.”
In any case, the workshops will be carried out with another technique in charge that has not yet been made official, sources from the Administration informed The Observer.
“The spirit of the birth of these workshops and The focus on this issue that pays attention to another type of violence that is latent in society, to a greater or lesser extent, cannot be overshadowed by statements that are not shared as an administration because they lack statistical support such as those made by the aforementioned technique“The commune said in a statement.
