Karol Juliana Pitalúa, an 11 -year -old girl, died last Saturday, April 19 after staying almost five weeks hospitalized after being impacted by lightning while participating in a physical education class in the San Antonio María Claret educational institution, in Montelíno, Córdoba.
The tragic event occurred on March 17, 2025, around 7:00 am, when four students were on the school, located near the Ecological Park, about the variant that connects with the municipality of Puerto Libertador.
As explained by Hugo Benedetti, rector of the institution, the electric shock left Karol Juliana in cardiorespiratory arrest. Teachers and classmates immediately acted to help her, and was urgently transferred to the Municipal Hospital by the Fire Department. Due to his critical status, he was referred to a medical center in Montería.
During their hospitalization, doctors confirmed that the girl had severe neurological damage and required constant mechanical ventilation. His condition was complicated with the passing of the days, and finally died due to a multiorgan failure, product of the sequelae of the electrical impact.
The case generated a deep sadness in the educational community and among the inhabitants of Montelíbano, who made vigils, prayer chains and solidarity activities to support the child’s family during their internment.
The other three students affected by lightning recovered satisfactorily.
