Despite the development that the family agriculture in the country thanks to the support of some public policies, the sector still needs to face the challenges of climate change and establish public politics articulated in favor of farmers, access to markets, investment in technology and rural welfare.
The suggestion is from the economist Arnold of Camposspecialist in management and evaluation of public policies, who is part of the mission for the project to strengthen the Family agriculture developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the Dominican Republic.
“RD has conventional farming systems that are not adapted to the climatic reality, such as rice. There are deficiencies in the management of soils, water, natural resources and biodiversity”, he indicated.

He specified that it is urgent for the country to adopt solutions to deal with the climate and better environmental management of production for the future of agriculturein addition to the fact that the adoption of sustainable practices is essential.
He indicated that in order to face hunger, the productive sector, the political sector and the Government must get involved and work together in order to establish alliances.
“Establish connections with the healthy food production chain in an inclusive manner, which allows generating positive results, not only economic, but also sustainable,” he pointed out.
The specialist explained that family farming represents more than 80% of farms in Latin America and the Caribbean, occupying between 12 and 67% of agricultural land, according to FAO statistics.
He said that in the DR it represents approximately 69% to 80% of production.
