Havana plant breakdown keeps the capital without gas service

Labores de mantenimiento en la Planta de Producción de Gas No.1 (Melones) de La Habana

Miami, United States. – The interruption of the manufactured gas service in Havana, initially announced As a temporary suspension due to maintenance work, it continues this Tuesday without a specific time of resumption.

As confirmed to Cubanet A collaborator in the capital, “last night at 9:00 pm the service for maintenance work that would last until 6:00 am today was interrupted. But it is already 10:30 am and nothing.”

The paralysis was recognized by the Government of Havana in A brief note published on social networkswhere he affirms that “from the early hours of the morning and without rest it is progressing to restore the service.” The works, according to the note, are found in “The Final Phase”, with the installation of “all the instrumentation and measurement equipment to begin the starting process.”

The Government warned that “all final assembly reviews are already being carried out, the reviews that cannot be missing before starting and performing them very carefully because an error can bring greater consequences.” However, the publication does not offer concrete details about the moment in which the supply will be restored. “We hope to give details in a short time during this day and with good results such as the population merits,” the note is limited to.

The lack of manufactured gas occurs in a critical context, in which the supply of liquefied gas has also been irregular and poor. As he recalled Cubanet in A report from late last yearsince 2013 the distribution of liquefied gas in Cuba has been progressively deteriorating, after being promoted as a safe alternative during the so -called “energy revolution.”

In October 2024, the liquefied gas company announced new effects on the service in Havana, Artemisa and Mayabeque, attributed to “complications in the payment system” that prevented fuel discharge. The official entity held the American embargo, claiming that “the credit was previously withdrawn.” However, as the article points out, the central problem is the inability of the regime to fulfill its financial commitments: “They did not give us the merchandise because we did not pay; before we were searched but no longer.”

Meanwhile, the progressive increase in the price of the gas cylinder – which rose from 180 to 225 pesos – and the suspension of new contracts since 2019 have aggravated access to the domestic fuel. The ration available for many families is insufficient, and the prolongation of purchase cycles has turned daily cuisine into a challenge. As a palliative in some provinces, coal has been sold, an option that has not been applied in a generalized way in the capital.

The lack of gas, both manufactured and liquefied, adds to the recurring electrical blackouts and food shortage, causing thousands of families in urban areas to improvise precarious methods for cooking, under conditions that directly affect health and home safety.

Despite the technical nature of the fault, the situation exposes a structural crisis of the Cuban energy system, where supply failures are not exceptional but increasingly frequent, and official management is characterized by the lack of transparency, the absence of alternative solutions and a narrative that discharges all responsibility in external factors.

At the close of this note, the manufactured gas service in Havana continued without being restored.
