Havana in the dark and the “employees” in calm

La Habana, apagón

Havana Cuba. – There is a saying that a liar is caught faster than a lame person. Thursday night almost all of Havana was left without electricity and life continued its normal course. I assumed that the next morning the networks would be bursting with news and images of “acts of vandalism” that occurred under the anonymity provided by darkness; but only talked about the massive protest that took place in the town of Nuevitas, Camagüeywhose residents could no longer bear the punishment of 12 hours a day, or more, without electricity.

From Havana, not a word, because nothing happened. However, Havanans are offended when in other provinces they assure that in the capital they do not turn off the current because we are communists here. I don’t think so, frankly; what happens is that in Havana people live a little better, the current goes away for less time and people believe that this way they can continue “pulling”. The news that arrives from the provinces is so sad that we Havanans are convinced that we have fewer reasons to complain.

The truth is that seeing the capital in the dark did not give anyone ideas. During the blackout, the routine was unalterable: very relaxed policemen and guards guarding the stores in MLC; people waiting at the stops for the bus to pass by, or in the doorways, drinking that concoction from the cellar they call coffee; many at the door of their home, telephone in hand, lamenting that there was almost no internet signal; and some paying what the boatman asked them to get home quickly.

In the dark were the Capitol, the Computing Palace, several ministries, the freely convertible currency stores, the ICRT and hundreds of buildings destined for the state management of misery; but all woke up intact. It is curious that none of them have been the target of those “neo-terrorists” that the scoundrel of Humberto Lopez interview in the Newscast; the Molotov cocktail makers, those who paint “Freedom” signs in exchange for allegedly hundreds of dollars.

It is incredible what those “employees” lost on Thursday night, because if they earned so much for a graffiti, how much would the “mafia” of always have paid for a couple of broken windows, or a fire in the grass of the Capitol. Reality denies, once again, the spokesmen of the official press who build acts of vandalism out of little lies, and try to describe a simple poster as terrorism.

A terrorist by vocation, or a saboteur with a real desire to fuck, would not have let the blackout pass on Thursday to put the dictatorship on the run. Humberto López lies, there is no doubt about that; and as much as it hurts to admit it, Havanans are not here for confrontation, but rather to raise the necessary money and get out of here once and for all.

Perhaps in the near future, when things get worse to another level – which is going to happen – the blackouts will be used for more than just clanging the cauldrons, offending Díaz-Canel or singing an irreverent chorus to the rhythm of the conga. The time will come for sure, because the situation is unsustainable on a national scale; but Havanans still need a more severe regime of rationing and power cuts.

Before the July 11, 2021 A social explosion of this magnitude was unthinkable. Many people said that nothing was going to happen here, but it did, and barely a year later the popular protest and the cacerolazo have returned to normal. Very soon the Cubans will realize that this is not enough either, that arriving at the Party headquarters where a handful of repressors offer the same justifications so that everything remains the same, does not solve the problem.

Between the institutional Vaseline and the acts of reaffirmation that are organized the next day, bleeding the meager public budget to denigrate those who want a better Cuba, Cubans will lose patience, they will shed their squeamishness and the neighborhood informer will be the first in taking a good batch of slaps, for being a traitor. From there they will continue to the Party headquarters, where they will drag out so many useless and corrupt officials, and it will not matter if they turn on the power or if the country is left in the dark.

When that moment arrives, those who lend themselves to acts of reaffirmation will wish they had never been born or will change sides, and Humberto López will not have time to put together his slander on duty because he will be very busy trying to flee, if before the leadership itself he does not throw it at the feet of the citizenry, to quench his anger.

The fall is inevitable, and Castroism knows it; but for now we must not believe the story of the influencers of Miami disbursing an outrageous amount of dollars in exchange for small cartels. For a real mercenary, Thursday night would have been like winning the lottery, so stop making up stories about a violent opposition that doesn’t exist. There is still a long way to go before this people perceives the weakness of the regime and becomes fully aware of its own strength. The day that all of Cuba gets up, they will no longer be able to take away the light.
