Harris accepts Democratic presidential nomination with unity speech

Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday at her party’s convention in Chicago, where she delivered a message of unity.

“On behalf of the people, of every American, regardless of party, race, gender, or what language your grandmother speaks, I accept your nomination,” said the 59-year-old vice president, who promised to lead the country on “a new path.”

“I will be the president who unites us in our greatest aspirations,” she promised at her first major public event, in front of

Harris, dressed in a navy blue suit, the color of the Democratic Party, thanked President Joe Biden for supporting her candidacy after she dropped out of the race for re-election.

“The path that brought me here was certainly unexpected,” Harris told the more than 5,000 delegates of the party that nominated her. “But I am no stranger to improbable twists and turns.”

Harris paid tribute to her parents as inspiring forces who shaped her career, and spoke of her origins in her native California, as the daughter of immigrants (her father is Jamaican and her mother was Indian).

The vice president is experiencing a night of glory at the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Earlier, Biden gave Harris another political boost on social media.

“I’m proud to see my colleague Kamala Harris accept our nomination for president. She will be an outstanding president because she is fighting for our future.”

As a prelude to the star of the night, singer Pink performed a minimalist version of “What About Us,” while the Texan trio The Chicks sang the national anthem a cappella.

Meanwhile, Trump continues his hectic national tour, this Thursday from Arizona, where he visited the border with Mexico to talk about migration, a crucial issue for his candidacy.

Considered a weak point for Harris, the Republican again accused migrants of killing Americans and tried to accuse the vice president of being indifferent to the situation.

After tonight’s speech, Harris will have 75 days to convince Americans to vote for her on November 5.

In Chicago, Harris has already won many hearts. “It’s going to be historic,” said Hawaii delegate Michael Golojuch, who came Thursday night to watch Harris’ running mate Tim Walz accept the vice presidential nomination.

“It is the honor of my life to accept your nomination for vice president of the United States,” Walz said in a brief but effusive speech.

Harris arrives for her big night after heavyweights and emerging voices of the Democratic Party descended on the United Center to tell the country that she is the right choice.

On Tuesday, Barack and Michelle Obama electrified the tens of thousands of people in attendance with calls for hope and unity.

On Wednesday night, former President Bill Clinton, a veteran of more than ten conventions, took the floor.
