Hard Rock Cafe reopens in Venezuela amid controversy over tree pruning

Hard Rock Cafe left Venezuela in 2020 after approximately 10 years in the country, after the covid-19 quarantine and the economic crisis. This Thursday, December 29, he opens his establishment in Los Palos Grandes with a concert by Caramelos de Cianuro

The international chain of restaurants Hard Rock Cafe inaugurates its first establishment in Venezuela this Thursday, December 29, after closing its doors in 2020. With its reopening in Caracas joins other foreign brands that return after leaving the country after the Venezuelan economic crisis, the expropriation and nationalization policy and the creation of laws against private companies.

The return of Hard Rock Cafe has been well received by Venezuelans, especially those who grew up visiting its iconic restaurant located in the Centro Comercial Sambil in Chacao in Caracas and later on the island of Margarita in the state of Nueva Esparta, Valencia in the state Carabobo and in Maracaibo in Zulia state. However, it has generated discomfort in the inhabitants of Los Palos Grandes in the east of the city due to the “pruning of a hundred-year-old tree” located on the sidewalk of the new establishment.

From the controversy between the residents of the Chacao municipality and the restaurant chain, it was learned that have a permit from the Ministry of Ecosocialism, as indicated by the journalist Fran Monroy on his social networks, since “the tree was in front of the premises.”

Monroy further reported that there was a meeting between the residents of Los Palos Grandes, Hard Rock Café and the mayor of the Chacao municipality, Gustavo Duque “to reach consensus on this trade.”

Since the year 2021, Numerous complaints of inappropriate felling and pruning have been reported in various regions of the country, and in Caracas, especially in the Baruta, Chacao and El Hatillo municipalities. These practices intensified until mid-2022 but continue despite warnings from communities and environmental organizations.

The Political Ecology Observatory of Venezuela has pointed out that felling and pruning if carried out without adequate technical criteria is extremely harmful to the urban ecosystem. «Apparently, municipal entities are unaware that trees capture carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, in addition to the fact that They have an extremely important role as mitigators of climate change.”

The Hard Rock Cafe opening whose space has 1,500 square meters will have new collectibles and with live music by the renowned Venezuelan musical band “Caramelos de Cianuro” that will offer the first show, according to what was published by the franchise on the social network Twitter. Tickets were reportedly sold out quickly.

With the de facto dollarization process in Venezuela and the increase in remittances in the country, there was an improvement in income and consumption, as well as in the importation of products that gave way to growth in the commercial sector. At the same time, the entertainment area was energized and the number of restaurants increased. Now, the question is whether the recovery of the economy that was observed in 2022 will continue in 2023 or if, on the contrary, it has already reached its ceiling.
