Efraín Alegre, presidential candidate for the Coalition, announced on 1080 AM that the mafia is not only installed in the ANR (Colorado Party), but has permeated all sectors.
“The problem of corruption in Paraguay is not just Horacio Cartes, it’s not just Velázquez, it’s much broader, there are more players on the court. Nor is it exclusive to a single party, it is not that only in the ANR there are scoundrels. The mafia has installed itself in various political sectors. We have to generate the institutional and democratic conditions to be able to resolve this situation of corruption and legal conduct, money laundering, drug trafficking, which places our country at risk, dangerous and discourages investment”, he stated.
He argued that many people now join the criticism that he has been making against Cartes for a long time. “It was not a matter of whims or personal order, but rather they are issues that directly affect our democratic system. And then when they designate Veláquez, our vice president, as significantly corrupt, what happens is that he is exposing us to the world, that we have corruption, and an entire mafia system in operation. What it tells us is that the international community is telling us that these behaviors are not tolerated, consequently we must do our homework”, he commented.
Finally, he said that Cartes himself admits that he cannot leave the country because he is going to put him on trial and he is going to go to jail, but in Paraguay there is no process. “The submission of our institutions guarantees impunity,” he sentenced.
