Hamas confirmed on Monday that the Palestinian Islamist movement received an Israeli proposal from Temporary truce in Gazaa territory that according to the UN crosses “probably the worst humanitarian situation since the beginning of hostilities.”
However, a Hamas authority told AFP that the Israeli proposal to end the war violates a non -negotiable “red line.”
The Islamist movement later announced in a statement that it will respond to the Israeli proposition after “the necessary consultations.”
According to the high position of Hamas, the Israeli proposal contemplates “the release of half of the hostages” in the first week after the agreement, in exchange for a ceasefire of “at least 45 days” and the entry of help to the ravish Palestinian territory.
In his plan transmitted through Egyptian mediators, Israel also demands the disarmament of Hamas and other armed factions in the strip, which is “an unnegotible red line”, said the person in charge of the group to the AFP.
Humanitarian crisis
The new proposal arises in times of growing international concern with the humanitarian situation in Gaza since Israel resumed military operations in that territory on March 18.
“The humanitarian situation is probably the worst since the beginning of hostilities 18 months ago,” the UN Humanitarian Agency (Ocha) said Monday.
He stressed in a statement that the last authorized supplies date from month and a half ago, or “be the longest interruption until today.”
Israel blocked on March 2 the entrance of humanitarian aid in Gaza, closing all the steps towards the small Palestinian territory, and then resumed its military operations on March 18, after two months of truce.
The truce started in January collapsed after Israel accused Hamas of refusing to deliver the hostages in their possession.
Humanitarian aid became “the first source of income” of Hamas in GazaSaid Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.
“For the closure of the passage points, reinforced by the restrictions within Gaza, the supply hardship forced the authorities to ration and reduce the supplies,” the ocha denounced.
In the Nasser hospital in the city of Jan Yunis, in southern Gaza, doctor Ahmed al Farah said that medical teams work without stopping despite the “shortage of everything.”
For his part, French president Emmanuel Macron told Mahmud Abás that it is necessary to “separate” Hamas from power in the Gaza Strip and “reform” the Palestinian authority to advance to a solution of two states in the conflict with Israel.
The Palestinian authority partially manages the occupied West Bank and is controlled by the Fatah Movement, of Abás, Hamas rivals that govern the Gaza Strip since 2007.
The current conflict in Gaza began with the attack of Hamas of October 7, 2023 against Israel that resulted in the death of 1,218 people and triggered an Israeli offensive in Gaza that has left more than 50,940 dead at the moment.
Hamas’s combatants took 251 Israeli hostages, of which 58 would still be in their possession in Gaza, including 34 that according to the Israeli army would be dead.
