Haiti’s private sector urges together an agreement to end the crisis

El sector privado de Haití urge unido a un acuerdo que ponga fin a la crisis

Port-au-Prince, (EFE).- The private sector of Haiti It has come together to ask for an agreement to end the serious crisis in the country because, it affirms, “the nation cannot wait any longer.”

In a statement known to EFE this Friday, Haitian associations and businessmen call on the parties to “resolve their differences without delay and sign a political agreement for a government of national unity that strives to include the largest possible number of actors with a clear roadmap to successfully carry out the holding of honest, transparent and impartial elections in a reasonable period of time”.

“Deeply concerned about the multidimensional crisis that does not stop mourning families, suffocating the national economy and impoverishing the vast majority of our fellow citizens,” the signatories pledge to support a political agreement in this regard and “accompany the implementation of the reforms that establish new rules of political and business conduct in Haiti and in the institutions that are created to achieve the objective sought.

The private sector overcomes its possible differences and thus joins, according to the text, in an “unprecedented alliance for change.”

In this sense, it undertakes to carry out different measures, including “launching an immediate and intensive program of reforms of internal commercial practices to promote transparency, fair competition and strict respect for the ethical and legal norms that should guide all economic activities in a democratic, peaceful and stable Haiti”.

Likewise, it adds, “we will develop a public-private code of conduct to ensure the transparency of competition practices, the rational and transparent obtaining and use of public funds, all under the strict application of the law in order to fight against corruption and impunity.

The signatories announce that they will cooperate with an eventual consensus transitional government to draw up “a political, humanitarian and economic roadmap for a new Haiti” and that it includes a strategic plan for economic and social development.

The objectives are to attract foreign and national direct investment, create lasting employment and wealth, restore quality basic services for the entire population and restore hope, particularly among young people, as well as improve living conditions, especially in the most affected by violence.

They will also contribute and support reforms in public institutions aimed at promoting free enterprise, fair and equal competition, direct investment, competitiveness, social inclusion and economic growth.

The signatories call with “the greatest urgency” on the Government and the international community to act to guarantee the free movement of people and goods.

In his opinion, this is “a unique opportunity for all Haitians,” both at home and abroad, to participate in the transformation of Haiti.

“Haitians need an urgent political transition, a new economic vision, and the security to allow them,” they stress.

Among the signatories are the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of the country’s departments, employers’ associations, and industrial associations.

The document was also signed by the American Chamber of Commerce in Haiti and the Haitian-Canadian Chamber.

The country is experiencing an acute crisis at all levels, including the reappearance of cholera, and a spiral of violence by armed gangs.
