Haiti, the Post and barbarism

A Saturday editorial in the US daily Washington Post has caused a stir, in which blame is distributed for the “convenient mercy” of the international community with Haiti and a “strong intervention” is demanded.

That “Haiti is sinking deeper and deeper into pandemonium” is what the Dominican Republic has been warning about and what President Abinader has been incisive about, but the fact that the Post says it helps the world become aware of the barbarism installed in the neighboring country.

Even frightening figures such as the fact that since Biden took office he has sent at least 26,000 Haitian immigrants to their country of origin fall short if they are not compared with what elCaribe editorialized on June 23: that in a year and a half Biden it has added more Haitian deportees than the entire periods of Bush, Obama and Trump, in which 17,090 were returned.

We must agree with the Post in its criticism, which accuses the OAS and the UN Security Council of carelessness, which never go beyond making lukewarm declarations of concern, although now the issue of a possible direct military intervention is back on the agenda. because in July the time assigned to the UN political mission in Haiti expired.

But the question remains as to what could be different if after 17 years the Blue Helmets left everything in Haiti the same, or worse, than when the “peace” military force was created in 2004.

Meanwhile, situations such as the one reported by the Post, which quotes the Reuters agency, occur: the seizure of containers with 18 weapons of war, pistols and 15,000 rounds of ammunition, in a shipment of supposedly school supplies and food sent from the US to the Haitian Episcopal Church.

Let us wait, then, for the new decisions of the UN, but the Dominican authorities know that the Haitian crisis has reached major proportions and, if different measures are not applied to those that have been applied up to now, Haiti would be the same with blue helmets as without them. .
