Haiti Police Division Operations Chief Murdered

The Operations Chief of the Departmental Order Maintenance Unit, Luckson Faverdieu, was assassinated today in the center of the Haitian capital, an area experiencing a marked wave of violence.

During the early hours of this Saturday, Faverdieu was hit by several shots on Christophe Avenue, Garry Desrosiers, spokesman for the police institution, confirmed to the press. Local media outlets indicated that he was heading towards the Toussaint Louverture International Airport.

Desrosiers added that an investigation will be opened to gather information about the event, together with the Western Departmental Directorate of the Police.

This is a new loss for the police institution in the midst of the rise in insecurity in the country and the growth of armed groups, some of them better equipped than the forces of order.

In just one week, at least 10 people were kidnapped in Port-au-Prince, and another five in Gros Morne, while riding a public bus. Earlier this month, armed gangs operating in Laboule 12 killed two journalists, and days before Prime Minister Ariel Henry fled an attack in Gonaïves.

The authorities promised on several occasions to fight against this phenomenon, although without presenting a concrete project.

For its part, the United States announced the day before an increase of 15 million dollars to help the Police combat gangs.
