Haiti once again has a power vacuum as the period of the Provisional Council expires

HOLY SUNDAY.-The crisis that persists in Haiti is once again marked by political uncertainty, a few hours before the term of the Presidential Transition Council (CPT) expires this Saturday, February 7, a body established in 2024 with the objective of leading the country towards elections and reestablishing institutional order.

As the deadline approaches, Haitian political actors and institutional sectors debate formulas to avoid a possible power vacuum in the midst of a context of generalized violence, institutional collapse and international pressure.

In this scenario, a meeting held for several days at the Montana Hotel in Port-au-Prince concluded with the defense of a new government structure called “dual executive.”

According to what was stated in the resolution read by former deputy Clovis Obas, the Presidential College would be made up of a member of the CPT, a representative of the Court of Cassation and a delegate from civil society.

In parallel to the internal debate, the United States Embassy in Haiti publicly expressed its support for Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, at a time when the CPT itself had begun a process days ago to replace him with an interim head of government within a maximum period of 30 days.

Washington expressed its opposition to abrupt changes in the government structure, believing that they could undermine efforts to restore basic security and stability in the country.

The State Department also recently announced the revocation of visas for two members of the CPT and their families for alleged ties to gangs and criminal organizations, adding further tension to the political landscape.

In the midst of this situation, the United States confirmed the arrival in Haitian waters of military vessels – the USS Stockdale, the USCGC Stone and the USCGC Diligence – as part of the so-called Operation Southern Spear.

According to the diplomatic delegation, the naval presence seeks to reaffirm the US commitment to the security and stability of Haiti, at a time considered critical for its political transition.
