Dedicating yourself to journalism brings good and bad things with experience. Unfortunately, it is in Haiti where the good of communication does not stand out especially in a failed nation in which the first independent country of France lives in this part of the world, now this country that has even become deadly for journalists.
Since its president was assassinated in July 2021, the island nation has fallen into a spiral of violence with journalists in the line of fire. The president was shot dead in his sleep at his home by assailants who have not been fully identified. . The president’s name was Jovenel Moïse and he passed away on July 7 of last year at the age of 53.
Now an English media echoes an obstacle to engage in communication that represents violence. Assuming the responsibility of being a journalist entails a serious commitment to use well the word or tool that serves to make common a fact or event of public interest.
this island of 27,560 square kilometers has a population of 11 million people, made up mostly of young people who focus their energy on threatening, creating fear and problems for the population trying to survive their days in this place.
Groups of criminals are taking control of this place and leading communicators to risk their lives for the simple and noble job of communicating what is taking place on this islet.
Geographical space where the problems are not only of criminal origin but where the police also have a leading role in history for having arrested the French journalist Roberto Dimanche. The journalists demanded the release of the radio reporter who
he had been jailed for covering a protest before being detained and beaten.
It is true that over time new channels, formats and even vocabulary are being born to make something common, however, in an unviable country like Haiti, nobody has guarantees of anything, least of all journalists.
Another fact that the English outlet exposes says that the police prepared to disperse the crowd of protesting journalists, one of them, the Haitian journalist Romelo Vilsaint, who was fatally shot in the head and fell to the concrete floor.
Events such as those described above should draw the attention of the security agents of each country in the world and also communication professionals who risk their lives in favor of freedom of expression and of the press.
Journalism at risk of death
Communication is an opportunity to expand and send messages that must be constructed with the truth and, above all, the respect that the reading public, audience or viewers deserve, who are the ones who support the media, to reach further than usual. That it is not the logo, name, location, amount of human or technical resources that it has, but the quality of communicators who speak, expose themselves or write in it, but that courage must have social support and State protection for the exercise of journalism that does not happen in Haiti and in many other countries.
Although some media formats are disappearing, the human, natural and organic habit of communicating will never end like breathing, seeing or
