More than 34 thousand people were affected by a heavy hailstorm that hit the municipality of Erechim, in the north of Rio Grande do Sul, on Sunday afternoon (23). The City Hall declared a Situation of Emergency throughout the municipality. 
To date, 189 injured people have been treated in hospitals and emergency units. Damage was recorded in homes, schools, health units, public roads and private buildings.
According to the state government, 21 state schools in Erechim were hit by hail. Classes remain suspended this Tuesday (25) in municipal and state schools and in private schools with places purchased by the municipality.
The government of Rio Grande do Sul authorized the transfer of R$1.5 million to the municipality. The resources made available will be used to purchase tiles for vulnerable families affected by hail.
According to the Civil Defense Monitoring Center (CMDEC), The hailstorm was caused by the action of an area of low pressure combined with heat and humidity in the region. Three alerts were issued by the state Civil Defense focusing on the municipality.
A team from the state’s Civil Defense is on site monitoring and surveying the situation for any further assistance that may be needed.
