Finance Minister Fernando Haddad stated this Wednesday (25) that the date of his departure from office will depend on President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s possible trip to the United States for a meeting with American President Donald Trump.
In an interview with journalists, Haddad said he intends to meet with Lula this Thursday (26) to decide whether he will join the presidential delegation. The bilateral meeting is expected to take place between March 15th and 20th, although there is still no official confirmation.

Since the end of 2025, Haddad has indicated his intention to leave the department to collaborate with Lula’s re-election campaign. Initially, he thought leave office in Februarybut the change is expected to take place in mid-March.
Before leaving, the minister intends to complete studies on financing alternatives for the zero-fare proposal for public transport, which must be presented by April, and the regulation on the taxation of cryptoassets.
Succession
The most popular name to take charge of the Treasury is that of the current executive secretary of the department, Dario Durigan. If the change is confirmed, the Secretary of the National Treasury, Rogério Ceron, will take over as executive secretary.
Despite publicly ruling out candidacy in this year’s elections, Haddad faces pressure within the PT to run for governor of São Paulo or one of the state’s two Senate seats. The minister, however, continues to make statements that he does not want to contest the next elections.
