The secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, called on countries to boost the energy transition to renewable sources. This Friday (21), Guterres said that political will needs to accompany decisions in the economy for a fair transition. He also demanded that the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), in Belém, present results.
“We need to quickly drive the just transition to renewable energy. Last year, 90% of new power generation capacity came from renewable sources. The economy is on our side. But political will needs to follow. Policies and budgets must be aligned so that all countries can make a just energy transition,” the UN Secretary-General wrote in a social network.
Earlier, when demanding results from COP30, which is in the final stretch, Guterres highlighted that the world is following the conference and has heard “enough excuses”.
“The world is watching the #COP30 climate conference and asking: How much more will we have to suffer? They’ve heard enough excuses. They demand results.”
Scheduled to end this Friday, the COP30 may be extended so that negotiations can reach the necessary consensus around the climate issues under debate.

During the morning, the president of the event, André Corrêa do Lago, called on countries to reach a consensus for the common good of the planet.
Corrêa do Lago said that the moment is one of international cooperation and that countries should not think of the results of the COP in terms of victory or defeat.
“We know how many obstacles there are to putting words into practice and how very difficult it is to reach consensus. But we can never forget that the same consensus that sometimes exasperates us – analysts, delegates, so many people – strengthens this regime. We have to show that this is the COP in which consensus is strength”, said the ambassador.
“We cannot divide ourselves in the context of the Paris Agreement. Here we have the perception of division that comes from several convention negotiators. We tried to reduce this notion of division during this negotiation, with transparency and true solutions that come from the delegations”, he added.
Earlier, the secretariat of the Climate Convention (UNFCCC) published a new version of the draft Belém Packagewith an annex that provides a list of indicators for the Global Adaptation Goal (GGA).
In the changes made in relation to the previous version of the document, social organizations point to progress, but still criticize the lack of decisions on the move away from fossil fuels.
