Gustavo Petro was invested, this Sunday, August 7, as President of Colombia for a period of 4 years.

“I swear to God and promise the people to faithfully comply with the Constitution and the laws of Colombia,” said the 62-year-old former senator and former guerrilla fighter before the head of Congress in the central Plaza de Bolívar in Bogotá.

The president of the Congress, Roy Barreras, pointed out: “We came to heal the wounds and to heal them you have to know them, you have to remember them, and we come from there.”

The congressman maintained that Petro came to power thanks to a river, to the mandate of a people who said “No more.” In this way, he underlined: “Yes, it was possible.” This last sentence was echoed by those attending the inauguration, among whom are representatives of the Colombian social movements.

Likewise, Barreras pointed out as a break in history that, for the first time, a progressive President arrived in Colombia: “That is indeed a break in history.” In turn, he urged the National Liberation Army (ELN) to lay down their arms.

«We came today to try to stop death and turn Colombia into a world power of life. Try to heal the wounds, to heal them you have to know them, you have to remember them, you have to know what that truth is and what causes it,” said the President of the Colombian Congress.

Petro receives the country with the highest inflation in the last two decades, unemployment above 11% and the promise to develop an ambitious social and environmental agenda, as well as to consolidate peace.
