Gustavo Petro calls to strengthen the human rights protection system in the world

Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed his interest in Colombia joining the Human Rights Council as a member state during the period 2025-2027. It is the first time, since the creation of this Council in 2006, that Colombia postulates its candidacy, since to date it has only served as an observer country.

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, participated this Monday 27 in the high-level segment during the opening of the 52nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. In his virtual intervention, the president focused his speech on peace and called to “reflect on the urgent need to strengthen the system for the protection of human rights in the world, identifying the main challenges and taking concrete actions to face them.”

For the Colombian president, this reflection and construction of actions should take place within the framework of a third World Conference on Human Rights, to give due continuity to the conferences held in Tehran, in 1968, and in Vienna, in 1993.

On the other hand, Petro asserted that for Colombia “the implementation of the recommendations that the Truth Commission delivered in July 2022 is a priority,” while saying that they need “cooperation and joint work with the system and the community international” to achieve it.

As part of these objectives, Petro commented, his government is advancing in the creation of the National System of Equality and Equity, led by the Ministry of Equality.

Another of the key points for the Petro administration is the construction of a new drug policy with a focus on human rights. As he explained, this approach involves leaving behind prohibitionism as the dominant paradigm and implementing strategies that address the structural causes of drug use such as poverty, lack of access to opportunities, institutional weakness, among others.

The Colombian president also expressed his interest in Colombia joining the Human Rights Council as a member state during the period 2025-2027. It is the first time, since the creation of this Council in 2006, that Colombia postulates its candidacy, since to date it has only served as an observer country.

In addition, the president notified the start of the procedure before the Colombian Congress for the ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture; recognition of the competence of the Committee against Enforced Disappearance to investigate individual complaints; and the withdrawal of the interpretative declarations formulated by Colombia to the Optional Protocol of the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women.
