The expectation in the political sphere of the Colorado Party has grown considerably in recent weeks regarding a potential return of the former senator Pedro Bordaberry.
This former leader of the Vamos Uruguay group is currently in talks to establish an agreement with the former presidential candidates. Gabriel Gurméndez and Tabare Vierawith the intention of presenting themselves under the same sub-slogan for the Senate elections to be held in October.
The information, which was revealed by the newspaper El País and later corroborated by La Diaria through a source close to the aforementioned leaders, has generated discussions about the internal structure of the party and its immediate future.
Cards on the table: Bordaberry in the next elections?
The conversations have echoed in the political corridors of the party, where we have heard claims that once Bordaberry confirms his decision, “so many will start to adjust.”
This statement, however, comes with a nuance of caution, since it has been pointed out that “nothing is finalized” in relation to his potential participation, which suggests that the conditions for an agreement are, for the moment, mere speculation.
According to the sources consulted, the plan is for the three former pre-candidates – Bordaberry, Gurméndez and Viera – to compete under the sub-lemma Vamos Uruguay, with a distribution of lists that would include 10 for Bordaberry, 29 for Gurméndez and 2000 for Viera.
In this context, Carolina Ache, who was a pre-candidate and is the head of the list in Montevideo, mentioned that although Bordaberry “has not spoken” with her about the matter, if he were to request the list, it would be “his.”
The leader stressed that her sub-slogan, called Vamos con la Justa, was registered in Montevideo and other departments, ensuring that it would not be lost in the event of the former senator’s return.
At the same time, significant movements have also been seen within the Ciudadanos sector, as they have received an “offer” from the group led by presidential candidate Andrés Ojeda.
This sector is currently evaluating the possibility of uniting under the same sub-lemma for the October elections. Within this dynamic, it has been confirmed that Gustavo Zubía, former deputy, will participate in the corresponding conversations.
It should be noted that this dialogue is taking place without the direct intervention of the party formula, seeking to avoid any type of interference in the campaigns of those involved.
Although the agreement between the sectors has not yet been finalized, relevant advances have been highlighted in the process. In this context, there has been speculation about the future of the Colorado Party, which could split into “two distinct blocks” internally, as a result of the alliances being formed.
Statements from insiders suggest that these recent moves represent not only an internal reconfiguration, but also a quest to strengthen the party’s positioning ahead of the upcoming elections.
On Thursday afternoon, the incorporation of list 15, led by Senator Raúl Batlle, to Ojeda’s Unir para Ganar sector was made official. This announcement is scheduled to take place at the central headquarters of the party, known for its connection with Gurméndez’s pre-candidacy in the internal elections.
These types of unions and alliances will be crucial to defining the future of the Colorado Party in the current political cycle, where the bases are adjusting to the changing dynamics and the search for a solid position vis-a-vis the electorate.
