Former Minister Guillermo Rivera was appointed as the first roving ambassador for Amazonian Affairs and Other Strategic Ecosystems of Colombia, an initiative with which the Government seeks to strengthen environmental protection.

“Guillermo Rivera Flórez will be the new roving ambassador of the Amazon, an appointment with which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of Colombia reaffirm their commitment to strengthen the defense and protection of the Amazon, an essential territory for the planet’s biodiversity and global climate balance.“the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Rivera, who is the country’s ambassador to Brazil and He was Minister of the Interior between 2017 and 2018 during the government of Juan Manuel Santos, will have to lead and coordinate diplomatic efforts for the protection of the Amazon ecosystem.

“His work will include promoting international cooperation initiatives, facilitating dialogue between Amazonian countries and representing Colombia in multilateral forums dedicated to environmental protection.“, the Foreign Ministry added.

The Ministry also explained that it will have to work with the communities for “that their rights and ancestral knowledge are respected and valued in all conservation policies“.
