Guillermo Novo Sampol, leader of the Cuban Nationalist Movement, dies in Miami

AREQUIPA, Peru – Guillermo Novo Sampol, a prominent figure in the Cuban exile, died during the early hours of this November 16 in the city of Miami, Florida, reported sources close to CubaNet.

Born on June 8, 1939, Novo Sampol dedicated part of his life to the cause of the freedom of the island as leader of the Cuban Nationalist Movement (MNC).

At the beginning of the 1950s, when he was in his early 20s, his family emigrated to the United States. Once he became a successful businessman, the Cuban relegated any professional ambition in favor of the anti-Castro struggle.

In 1959, the same year that Fidel Castro To celebrate the triumph of his “Revolution”, which became a dictatorship, Guillermo Novo Sampol founded, together with his brother Ignacio, also deceased, the MNC in New York.

Both proposed a radical renewal of Cuban nationalism based on the Western roots of Cuban civilization. His thesis was of resistance and total war against Castro communism, correctly stating that it was a destructive force of the Cuban nation.

“We know well that we can say that Cuba will be free. It won’t be today or tomorrow, but it doesn’t matter because our prisoners inspire us and armed with our ideas we will continue. And if there are three or more prisoners behind, three more come to take their places, (…) and if they kill us and imprison us all it doesn’t matter because the others come behind and when they are all gone there will be more…” said Novo Sampol from the stadium. Roosevelt of New Jersey in 1976.

Dedicated to his libertarian vision for Cuba, the MNC leader was imprisoned in the United States and Panama.

His efforts contributed decisively to the organization of the Cuban community, especially in New Jersey, and to its transformation into a political and economic force in the United States, committed to removing the Island from the clutches of the regime.

“The times of politicking and bowler hats have passed, the historical responsibility is on our shoulders and we will know how to fulfill it. We are aware that the easy way does not exist, the return without sacrifices is impossible,” Novo Sampol highlighted in 1974.
