MIAMI, United States. – Guillermo García Frías, one of the few commanders of the Cuban Revolution who is still alive, turns 95 this Thursday.

“Today the first peasant incorporated and promoted in the Rebel Army, the commander of the Revolution, Guillermo García Frías, turns 95,” tweeted the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel.

The Cuban dictator also celebrated that García Frías continued “at the foot of the canyon, now in defense of the flora and fauna of the Cuban fields.”

Guillermo García Frías, one of the last commanders of the Cuban Revolution, was born on February 10, 1928 in Pilón, present-day province of Granma. Due to his role during the armed struggle led by Fidel Castro in the Sierra Maestra, in which he became second in command of the Third Eastern Front, he reached the rank of commander. After January 1959, he was declared “Hero of the Republic of Cuba”.

After the triumph of the Revolution, García Frías was head of the Army of the West, vice president of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers, Minister of Transportation and creator of the National Company for the Protection of Flora and Fauna, whose direction he occupies in the present.

In April 2019, the military man became the target of memes, criticism, and ridicule on social networks for his statements about the use of ostrich meat to feed Cubans.

At that time, García Frías pointed out in the official program Round table that the island’s regime was working on ostrich farming as an effective alternative for the production and distribution of meat.

Likewise, he praised the properties of ostrich and jutía meat. In the case of the running bird, he went so far as to say that it produced “more meat than a cow.”

After his statements, which were considered “offensive” towards the island’s people, photomontages associating the image of the ostrich with that of García Frías and that of the late dictator Fidel Castro also multiplied. Due, “ostrich” led the searches of Cubans on the internet throughout April 2019.

That same month, CubaNet published the report “The heir of Commander Guillermo García Frías”which exposes the luxurious life of the young Jorge Alejandro de Cárdenas García, one of the grandsons of the Commander of the Revolution.

“Jorge Alejandro, son of Loreta García, the eldest daughter of Guillermo García Frías, is the 25-year-old who could perhaps inherit the immense patrimony of his grandfather, the only person in Cuba who is allowed to own billboards for cockfights. where bets are collected that, under the table, add up to between 100 and 150,000 dollars per year, as well as spaces to auction valuable equine specimens”, reads the text published by this medium.
