Guillermo García Frías’ grandson leaves Cuba to seek a contract with the Major Leagues

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- Guillermo García, grandson of Commander Guillermo García Frías, arrived in the Dominican Republic this Tuesday and from that country, will pursue a contract with the Major Leagues (MLB).

The news was confirmed on the sports journalist’s social networks Francys Romerowho explained that García has extensive experience as a baseball player.

He participated in two U-23 World Cups (2021, 2022) and then in the Pre-World Cup of the same category in Nicaragua. In the Dominican Republic, he will go through a preparation stage and will have presentations before Major League organizations.

According to the state site EcuredGarcía was born on January 30, 1999 in the city of Bayamo, Granma. His mother, Marina García Vega, is one of the daughters of Guillermo García Frías.

García joined the national team in 2018 and participated with it in the Pan American youth baseball championship held in Panama.

In 2019, he appeared on a list of 34 amateur players released to undertake contracts with Major League Baseball (MLB) clubs.

He was later included in a preliminary list of Cuban baseball talent pools, prepared by the National Commission of this sport, to join the 2020-2024 Training Center.

This year, the site Cuban Ball Garcia announced that the youngster signed a professional contract with the Quebec Capitales of the Frontier League, an independent league that operates in Canada and the United States.

The previous two seasons, he had been with the Chunichi Dragons in the Japanese League where he made his debut with the major team.

The baseball player’s mother, Marina García Vega, died in the plane crash on May 18, 2018 in Havana, which caused 112 deaths and was probably caused by a series of errors of the crew.

Young Guillermo’s grandmother and Marina’s mother, Margarita, joined the ranks of the Rebel Army, where she probably met G.Guillermo Garcia Frias, one of the few commanders of the Cuban Revolution who is still alive and who has been benefited by the regime.

Marina Garcia worked for years in the provincial government of Granma, in the Department of Price Formation, and in the El Potro, Cubalse and TRD Caribe stores.

Guillermo García Frías, one of the last commanders of the Cuban Revolution, was born on February 10, 1928 in Pilón, present-day Granma province.

For his role during the armed struggle led by Fidel Castro in the Sierra Maestra, where he became the second in command of the Third Eastern Front, he rose to the rank of commander. After January 1959, he was declared a “Hero of the Republic of Cuba.”

After the triumph of the Revolution, García Frías was head of the Western Army, vice president of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers, Minister of Transport and creator of the National Company for the Protection of Flora and Fauna, whose direction he currently holds.
