For the next three years, investigative journalists Margo Smit, Mauricio Weibel, Yasuomi Sawa and Mae Azango will join the jury.

Awarded annually on the occasion of the World Day of Press Freedom (May 3) that this year will take place in Punta del Este (Uruguay) from May 2 to 5, 2022, the Prize it is celebrated with a ceremony and the winner receives the sum of 25,000 dollars.
The winner of Prize last year it was Maria Ressa, journalist Philippine research. Maria Ressa was also awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. Previous recipients include many of the leading journalists research from different regions of the world.
The candidatures, submitted by UNESCO Member States and international and regional NGOs active in the field of freedom of the press, are received with the submission of the form in English or French and sending it before the deadline to the UNESCO Secretariat ([email protected] and [email protected])
The Prize was created by the Executive Council of UNESCO, in 1997, in honor of William Cano, Colombian journalist assassinated in the exercise of his profession. Its objective is to reward each year a person, organization or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defense of the freedom of the press.
This year, the journalists researchers Margo Smit (Netherlands), Mauricio Weibel (Chile), Yasuomi Sawa (Japan) and Mae Azango (Liberia) join the competition juries for the next three years, which are completed by: Zainab Salbi (Iraq) and Alfred Lela (Albanian); the latter will chair the group.
The new members of the jury replace Marilu Mastrogiovanni (Italy), Wendy Funes (Honduras), Hamid Mir (Pakistan) and David Dembele (Mali). (DLH)
