Bahian swimmer Guilherme Caribé returned to the podium this Sunday (15), winning silver in the 50 meter freestyle, three days after being runner-up in the 100m freestyle at the World Swimming Championships in a short pool, in Budapest (Hungary) . The 21-year-old athlete completed the first 25m of the race in third position and in the final straight he took a surprising start, securing silver by completing the race in 20.57, just 38 hundredths behind the winner Jordan Crooks (Cayman Islands). Bronze went to North American Jack Alexy (20s61). Brazil ended its participation in the World Cup with three podiums: in addition to the silver in Caribé, Caio Pumputis from São Paulo won bronze this week in the 100m medley.
Before competing in the 50m freestyle final, Caribé set the sixth best time (20s81) in the qualifiers, advancing to the semi-finals. The Brazilian improved his performance in the semi, setting the third best time (20s59) which qualified him for the final.
“It was an excellent World Cup for Brazilian swimming. We left here with three medals and renewed spirits. We can say that we started the cycle to Los Angeles on the right foot. We know we have a lot of work to do, but I’m sure this World Cup will give confidence to our team”, celebrated Swimming Manager Gustavo Otsuda of the Brazilian Aquatic Sports Confederation (CBDA).

Last Thursday (12), the Bahian from Salvador not only won silver in the 100m freestyle, but also broke the South American record for the race, held by his compatriot César Cielo, which had been in place for 14 years. Caribé completed the distance in 45s47, a time 40 hundredths slower than that of Cielo, achieved at the José Finkel Swimming Trophy, in Rio de Janeiro.
This Sunday’s event (15) was Caribé’s fourth in the short pool World Cup, which started last Tuesday (10). The young athlete advanced to three finals. He finished fifth in the 4x100m freestyle relay – alongside Marco Antônio Ferreira Júnior, Kaique Alves and Leonardo Santos. The quartet set a new South American record by finishing at 3:04.84. The gold went to the North American team (3min01s66) that broke the world championship. Italy, until then holder of the best world record, finished with silver, and bronze went to Poland (3min04s46).
This Sunday (15), the last day of the World Cup, Brazil competed in four other events, but the athletes did not do well in the qualifiers. Maria Fernanda Costa came in 13th place in the 200m freestyle with a time of 1min55s00 – only the top eight placed went to the final.
