The leader of Cabildo Abierto, Guido Manini Ríos, showed his willingness to collaborate with some initiatives of the incoming president, Yamandú Orsi, during a recent visit to former president José Mujica at his farm in Rincón del Cerro. In the meeting, which was reported by the weekly Busqueda, both spoke about the political panorama that lies ahead with the inauguration of Orsi and the configuration of the new Parliament, in which the Frente Amplio will not have an absolute majority in the Chamber of Deputies.
The left coalition, led by Orsi, will need at least two additional votes to achieve an absolute majority in the Lower House. Precisely, Cabildo Abierto has two elected deputies, Álvaro Perrone from Canelones and Silvana Pérez from Montevideo, which opens the possibility of support in future votes. According to Busqueda, Manini expressed his willingness to collaborate on the incoming president’s projects, which could facilitate some agreements in the new political context.
In the conversation, Manini also took the opportunity to return to a topic that he had previously proposed: the release of elderly soldiers who are imprisoned in the Domingo Arenas prison, accused of crimes committed during the dictatorship (1973-1985). During the current legislature, this proposal did not achieve the necessary support from coalition partners to be approved, but Manini continues to insist on his defense of the rights of former military personnel.
The bond between Manini and Mujica is long-standing. In fact, Manini rose to the position of commander in chief of the Army during the Mujica government, which has influenced their political relationship over the years. This new example of collaboration and dialogue between both politicians could be key in the configuration of the new political scenario that is approaching with the inauguration of Orsi.
