#GuestColumn | Does Morena Coahuila deliver?

On December 12, the national leader of the president’s party, Mario Delgado, announced that according to the results of three polls, the Morenista candidate for governor of Coahuila would be Senator Armando Guadiana Tijerina.

In the Mendoza y Blanco poll, the senator was in first place, but not in the Covarrubias poll, where the expansionist Luis Fernando Salazar surprised. The decisive survey was the one applied by Morena, an exercise carried out between December 3 and 5 that included 1,536 face-to-face interviews.

The process was immediately disqualified by Ricardo Mejía Berdeja, federal undersecretary for Public Security. A candidate for the candidacy who appeared in third place in the polls, as they revealed that he was only known by 26% of Coahuilenses. He accused Guadiana Tijerina of being a compadre of the Moreira brothers, Humberto and Rubén, former state governors.

Guadiana Tijerina is a mining businessman, owner of coal mines, who has had a strained relationship with the Moreiras. Ten years ago, Humberto Moreira, who ruled between 2005 and 2011, accused him of having ties to organized crime. Those were times in which Guadiana aspired to become a senator for the PRI, without achieving it.

What they have agreed on at present is to discredit Mejía Berdeja. “In this country there is no peace because the Federal Police does not do its job, and Undersecretary Sóstenes Mejía Berdeja likes to attack everyone, except criminals; that he go after the criminals and that he not play a duck ”, Rubén Moreira – coordinator of the PRI legislators in the Chamber of Deputies – reproached him on the penultimate day of 2022.

Mejía Berdeja is an ex-PRI member. From a young age, he was a member of the PRI, where he founded the National Youth Parliament, México Siglo XXI, and until 1997 he was still recognized as an active member of that party, of which he was general secretary of the National Confederation of Popular Organizations (CNOP) in Coahuila and national political adviser.

In the PRD he served as a delegate of the National Executive Committee in the Durango and Tamaulipas regions. By 2008, his efforts were focused on winning, as an adviser, the municipal presidency of Acapulco, Guerrero. He supported Luis Walton Aburto, from the Convergence party and who came in second in the election. Mejía Berdeja became secretary of Organization and Political Action of that party.
