Guayana Bonita workers denounce non-payment and dismissals

According to workers from the Guayana Bonita Plan, a regional beautification program developed since 2021, since July 2022 they have not received the payment of the $20 bonus that they were promised when they began their work. They denounced that they have not received their January salary

Workers of the Guayana Bonita Plan denounced Caroní Mail the non-compliance of the Bolívar state government with the payment of their salaries and benefits for seven months, and on February 6, when consulting about their situation, Yajaira de Marcano informed them that the beautification program was cancelled.

The Guayana Bonita Plan is a regional beautification program developed since 2021 by the governor of Bolívar, Ángel Marcano. According to the complainants, the project included street sweeping, waste collection and weeding of the city.

As for who will fulfill the functions that they were performing, the workers assure that these tasks will now be in charge of the private company Fospuca.

“We are 350 people, the conditions under which we were hired were minimum wage, a bonus of 20 dollars a month and a bag of food with ten products. We started working in April 2022 and the contract was for one year,” explained Yelise Arteaga, a beneficiary of the Guayana Bonita Plan.

Arteaga said that “since July 2022 we began to lack the payment of the bonus. The fortnights were paid, but right now in the month of January we do not charge the 15th or the last. Yesterday (February 6) we spoke with the first lady, Yajaira de Marcano, and she confirmed that we are already out of the entity’s payroll system. We were never notified of anything.”

In this sense, those affected alleged that since July they have not received the payment of the $20 bonus that they were promised when they began their work. Subsequently, in the month of November, the transports, both from San Félix and from Puerto Ordaz, stopped passing, citing lack of gasoline. Finally, in the month of January, the payment of salaries was suspended.

“The first lady confirmed to us that we are out of the system, that is, fired. That’s why we didn’t charge last month. There are many irregularities. There is a group that has not been paid fortnightly since September, supposedly due to a system error. Since September they do not charge anything. There are others that since the end of October do not charge anything. And, in my case, I am owed the bonuses from July to November, which were the months that I worked”, explained the spokesperson for the group of victims.

Arteaga pointed to José Miguel Lozada as the person in charge of the project and the person who hired them, however, he has not answered his calls or agreed to meetings.

“The first lady assured us that she was going to speak with the governor. Let’s wait for this Wednesday. If not, on Thursday we will go to the Governor’s Office. We are making the complaint in all media. We are all fathers of families and mothers of families who are unemployed”, settled the affected.
