MIAMI, United States. — The Guatemalan authorities expelled this Sunday more than 100 migrants, most of them from Cuba and Venezuela, who were irregularly transiting through the Central American country, reported the EFE Agency.

The report indicates that agents of the National Civil Police intercepted 111 migrants who were traveling on board two buses, in the department of Santa Rosa, located in the south of that nation.

The migrants were placed in the custody of the authorities of the Guatemalan Institute of Migration (IGM), an entity that will be in charge of their expulsion to Honduras, the country through which they entered.

Among the 111 people were some of Dominican and Uruguayan nationality.

The drivers of the buses that transported the migrants, who were identified as Victor Vásquez and Carlos Ramírez, were also captured.

From September 1 to November 10, 9,435 migrants who entered Guatemala have been expelled, according to statistics from the Guatemalan Migration Institute.

In total, 6,460 Venezuelan migrants, 1,005 Ecuadorians, 482 Cubans and others from 20 other nationalities have been expelled from the country.

Official figures indicate that so far this year more than 15,000 people have been expelled from Guatemala for entering irregularly.

The note of the Agency EFE highlights that Guatemala has created a police and military fence in the northeast of its territory to prevent the passage of migrants, mainly South Americans, who have embarked on an exodus to the United States in search of better living conditions.

In October, the Central American country mobilized some 1,200 Army personnel to operate immigration checkpoints.

Guatemala is one of the mandatory crossing countries for Cubans. Most nationals trying to reach the southern border of the United States fly into Nicaragua and subsequently cross borders through Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico.
