MIAMI, United States. — The Guatemalan authorities detained 48 migrants, including 20 Cuban citizens, who were transiting through that country irregularly.
The Guatemalan Institute of Migration (IGM) indicated in a release that after receiving rigorous attention, the migrants were transferred from the Immigration Assistance Center for Foreigners to a border post located in Agua Caliente, Chiquimila, a town very close to Honduras and El Salvador.
“After providing them with the corresponding attention, the expulsion of 48 people to Agua Caliente, Chiquimila was coordinated from the Immigration Assistance Center for Foreigners (CAMIEX), “the note specifies.
In addition to the 20 Cubans, among the detained migrants there were 12 Venezuelans, seven Ecuadorians, five people from Bangladesh and four from Nepal.
“The transfer was carried out on a National Civil Police bus, to whom we thank for their support,” the IGM publication details.
It should be noted that Guatemala has reinforced the police and military siege in the northeast of its territory to prevent the passage of migrants, mainly South Americans, who have embarked on an exodus to the United States in search of better living conditions.
On November 13, the authorities of that country expelled more than 100 migrants, mainly Cubans and Venezuelans, who were transiting Guatemalan territory irregularly.
A month earlier, in October, the Central American country had deployed some 1,200 Army troops to operate the immigration checkpoints.
Guatemala is an obligatory transit country for those Cubans who undertake the route towards the southern border of the United States. However, many of them are expelled and returned to Honduras, the country they arrived from Nicaragua.
