Guatemala captures an alleged Mexican drug trafficker and destroys marijuana plantation

The National Civil Police (PNC) of Guatemala detailed that the intervention took place in the municipality of Las Cruces, in the department of Petén, an area bordering Mexico and Belize. Police forces and the Guatemalan Army participated in the deployment.

The operation also saw the seizure of two RPG-7 grenades, six anti-tank ammunition, seven rifles, a pistol, a revolver and hundreds of useful cartridges. In addition, authorities located and eradicated more than 430,000 marijuana plants, whose value was estimated at 20.9 million dollars.

The arrest of Medina García is the second arrest for extradition purposes carried out by the PNC so far this month.

According to investigations by US authorities, the detainee is part of a criminal organization based in Mexico that, since at least 2025, has conspired to transport large shipments of cocaine from Colombia and other countries to the United States. The criminal structure controlled clandestine runways in Mexican territory to receive the shipments and coordinated their subsequent transfer.
