Guasu Front: The Synonym of Party Unity

Guasu Front: The Synonym of Party Unity

Formed in 2010 with the idea of articulating the dispersed electoral forces, which then supported the Government of Fernando Lugo, Senator Esperanza Martínez said that after the parliamentarian in 2012, the Guasu Front became a period of resistance until the table of presidents of the agreement became a political table.

“Since then, we have discussed the political lines and the lines of intervention in Parliament on a weekly basis. This, with the leadership of Fernando Lugo, has given strength to the movement, to move forward towards ideas and proposals channeled in the Parliament itself or through social leadership”, Martínez determined.

In this way, the Guasu Front gradually formed its own image within social problems and political participation, standing out not only for its resilience after an abrupt leap to a new change of government, after the Lugo trial, but also by its unit over time. Thus, with a relevant role, the movement remains as a connected bench without dissidence.

“We have had divided votes on very few occasions, this being more of an anecdote than a rule and this is due to the existence of a political line in our agreement, originated after the Tape Guasu government plan in 2013, reformulated in 2018 and in new elaboration for 2023”, highlighted the senator.

In this way, Martínez stressed that the reason for the unity of the Guasu Front is focused on having political clarity on the projects, as well as on the lines of work in the reforms and transformations of the Paraguayan State. He also added the firmness maintained by the bench, despite even keeping 7 votes of their own, as they focus on keeping the party line.

ELECTORAL PROCESS
For the director of the Guasu Front, Mercedes Canese, it is important to understand the formation of the movement in order to understand the existence of partisan diversity. Although it stands out for being a progressive nucleation, different ideologies are seen: some more to the left, others more to the center left, etc., giving way to constant debate, which forms the characteristic of the movement.

“The approach of the bills of the Guasu Front has a lot to do with the social bases of the party because within the group there are parties with peasant, union, student, etc. bases,” Canese stressed, also highlighting that within the group there is a greater reception for partisan concerns.

Apart from all the sensitivity of work and our social bases, in our project there is also an understanding of the need to strengthen the State to guarantee everything that the Constitution establishes regarding rights. “For this reason, we also want the industrial sector to be strengthened and we do not leave aside the business sector because they also find in the guasú front an inclusive response with the goals that we pursue as a political organization,” he stressed.

He also pointed out that it would be a dream for the Guasu Front to be able to advance in everything that has to do with guaranteed rights, improve the quality of democracy because the government parties benefit from low quality, when the electoral system is very vulnerable.

Another line is found around greater tax justice because Canese ruled that those who support the budget are the poorest. This is also the case with the struggle for a better distribution of land, especially for the recovery of ill-gotten land; this without mentioning the rights of indigenous peoples and hydroelectric sovereignty, which does not leave aside the caucus either.

Foundations of the solidity of the Guasu Front
(According to Senator Hugo Richer)
– Clear ideological links within their parties, taking into account the doctrinal emptying mainly of the traditional party: the Colorado.
– The element that ideologically unites the political project is the Tape Guasu, due to its economic, social, cultural and international political components.
– The constant debate within the Guasu Front on the national situation, being the only one that practically expresses itself on the great national problems.
– In the Guasu Front, the parties have an opinion about the differences and disagreements because as there is no room for debate, the conditions for escapes are created.
