Camejo Corrales Cuba, COVID-19, Coronavirus, Prisión Provincial de Guantánamo, Recluso, Preso

Havana Cuba. — From the maximum rigor prison in Guantánamo, in the east of the country, the prisoner Arturo Acosta Ramos He denounced by telephone new reprisals by officers of that prison for demanding the return of his stolen belongings.

The inmate was imprisoned in building 1 of the Combinado del Este until he was transferred to the Guantánamo provincial prison on July 21, 2022 as punishment for sympathizing and collaborating with 11J protesters held captive in the Havana prison.

Acosta Ramos had denounced in a previous phone call that on August 2 he was attacked by five prisoners for complaining about poorly prepared food and mistreatment by doctors. Upon returning from the hospital where he was treated for the injuries caused by these inmates, he discovered that all his belongings had been stolen. When he reported the robbery to Major Eddie Ramírez, the prison’s re-educator, far from taking action against the aggressors, they locked him in the torture chamber that the staff of the Guantánamo provincial prison calls a “psychiatric room”, a room with five infested beds. of bedbugs, attached to the ground, where they kept him tied hand and foot, naked, for four days.

Acosta Ramos adds that on October 18 he was locked up again in that room for claiming his belongings again and protesting that one of the aggressor inmates was transferred to a camp (minimum severity regime).

The prisoner also said he was beaten and tied up by Major Robert, head of re-educational treatment, and Second Lieutenant Marlon, jailer, who whipped him with a hose. While the confinement lasted, they did not give him any food, just as they did not feed him when he was previously punished. On neither occasion did they release him, not even to relieve himself.

Arturo Acosta Ramos is a native of Havana. He also stresses that since he was transferred to the Guantánamo provincial prison he has not been able to receive visits from anyone. His only close relative, his father Arturo Acosta Rodríguez, became hemiplegic due to a cerebral infarction caused by a beating inflicted on him by the military when he tried to file a complaint about his son’s case four years ago and he does not have the physical conditions or resources to travel to the other end of the island.

The permanence of Acosta Ramos in the Guantanamo prison constitutes a violation of the Jail and Prison Regulations in force in Cuba, which establishes a limit to the distance allowed between the penitentiary center and the inmate’s home.
