An indigenous person identified as Valdemar Marciano Guajajara was found dead this morning (28) in the city of Amarante do Maranhão (MA), located 683 km from the capital, São Luís. According to the Indigenous Missionary Council (Cimi), the body of Valdemar, who lived in the Nova Viana village, in the Arariboia Indigenous Land, was found with marks of beatings on his head.
The body was found in a neighborhood in the urban area of the city of Amarante do Maranhão, which borders the indigenous land. A team from the Legal Medical Institute (IML) went to the location and removed the indigenous man’s body. There is still no report to inform the cause of death.
“Cimi Regional do Maranhão is demanding a response from the authorities in relation to the escalation of violence against the Guajajara indigenous people, which has only grown since September 2022. So far, there have been six cases of violent attacks in the region,” said Cimi via email. a social network.
On Wednesday (25), another indigenous person was found dead near the Cana Brava Indigenous Land, on the banks of BR-226, in Aldeia Jurema, located close to the municipality of Grajaú (MA). According to Cimi, the body of José Inácio Guajajara was found with marks of violence, but according to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) of Imperatriz (MA), the death resulted from natural causes.
