The opposition Juan Guaidó insisted this Sunday on the need to achieve a “comprehensive agreement” with the government of Nicolás Maduro that allows free and fair presidential elections, scheduled for 2024.
“We ratify the need for international pressure, to achieve a comprehensive agreement and to consolidate unity with primaries and presence in the streets to obtain the free and fair presidential election that they owe us,” he wrote on his Twitter account.
On June 28, the opposition gathered in the Unitarian Platform, of which Guaidó is a member, held a meeting with a delegation from the United States Government that was in Venezuela in order to coordinate efforts to resume the negotiation process with the Venezuelan government.
“On the occasion of the visit of the North American delegation, we have met today to coordinate efforts in order to reestablish the negotiation process.” This was indicated by the anti-Chavista platform in a statement released by Gerard Blydeone of their spokesmen.
Guaidó calls for dialogue
The opposition maintained that it is ready to “immediately” resume the negotiation process under the memorandum of understanding signed by both parties in Mexico last August, which aims to “end the suffering of Venezuelans and achieve change through most powerful instrument that the citizen has, the vote.
For its part, the Russian government stated on July 4 that it was willing to support the Venezuelan dialogue. This in order to overcome the internal contradictions of the nation, according to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Lavrov assured that “in the event that the government and the opposition platform decide to resume their negotiations in Mexico, Russia will be willing to continue monitoring this international platform for dialogue.”
The Venezuelan government and the opposition agreed to a negotiation table in Mexico in August 2021. However, it was suspended in October by the ruling party, as a sign of protest over the extradition to the United States of Colombian businessman Álex Saab, identified as an alleged figurehead of Maduro.
