The inhabitants of Chiapas have been affected by clashes between alleged members of organized crime who are fighting for territory, mainly on the Comalapa Border.
An example of this is the kidnapping of Anibal Roblero Castillo, the elected mayor of the municipality, who was taken by armed men on September 3 in Tuxtla Gutiérrez. The wave of violence is due to the fight between groups such as the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel, as well as the Chiapas and Guatemala Cartels, which seek to control the border municipality.
Since the second half of July, residents of various communities in Chiapas have abandoned their homes and migrated to Guatemala, after receiving threats and attacks.
Meanwhile, in Sinaloa, Governor Rubén Rocha Moya announced the suspension of the celebration of Mexican Independence and stated that only the formal ceremony will take place, without musical performances.
“We have decided that the celebration of the Grito on September 15 will be suspended; there will be no celebration, public or private. (…) We will hold the Grito, basically the protocol, here at the Government Palace with the presence of the military band escort and my cabinet, exclusively, there are no guests.
“You can count on us not to rest, we will not abandon the fundamental task of providing you with security,” he said in a video.
The decision was made after the attacks and clashes in Culiacán, Cosalá, Elota and San Ignacio, as well as the arrest in the United States of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who was one of the leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel. The state is also on alert due to the presence of tropical storm Ileana.
In Zapotitlán Palmas, Oaxaca, the celebration was cancelled due to a conflict over possible political “instability” in the municipality, whose Government Palace has been occupied by an opposition group since December 2023.
