Grief: a painful adaptation process

Grief: a painful adaptation process

This time is an emotional response to the loss of a loved one.

The death of a relative is one of the most difficult episodes that a person can experience. This moment leads individuals to experience an indescribable emptiness or mourning that distances them from their environment and makes them focus only on the sadness they feel for their loss.

According to neuropsychologist Oom Blanco, grief is the emotional response to the sudden experience of loss.

“It’s a painful adaptation process, a path to travel when we lose someone important in our lives,” he explains.

Blanco assures that dealing with the loss of a loved one will never be easy. The specialist indicated that facing the loss will always depend on the attachment relationship and the bond that has been had, alleging that each person is a universe in constant interaction where the explanation of behavior does not have a causal nature.

“The experience of losses and duel It is of great importance in the adaptation of each of the systems where we interact”, he stated.

Likewise, he expressed that people who go through this mourning can present anxiety disorders, depression, complicated mourning and somatization (chronic hysteria), these diseases are derived from pain, because there is no space to internalize the inevitable outcome of the separation. physical, leaving many questions, questioning, doubts and impotence.

The understanding of death and expression of grief varies according to the context, age and the link between other relational circumstances such as communication, distance and if there is a delicate state of health such as cancer or the Alzheimer’s.

“Death is a universal, irreversible, definitive and unpredictable process,” he said.

He also stated that death marks the end of existence and creates a feeling of emptiness, leaving a great mystery about continuity.

When asked about the false happiness that some people seem to have after suffering a loss, he pointed out that trying to bury or deny the loss always generates worse dysfunctions and exacerbates the trauma, triggering other emotional and health management situations.

“The stages of duel are broadly defined. When someone important leaves us, our existence stops making sense… somehow there is a fundamental part that stops and generates a feeling of limbo, ”she said.

Characteristics of the duel

The expert expressed that the grieving process is very changeable and will depend on families, culture and societies.

“It is a unique and unrepeatable process, dynamic and changing from moment to moment and a variable event from person to person and between families, cultures, societies,” he said.

Teaching

The doctor stated that the death of a loved one teaches us the value of life, effort and the relativity of many other realities to which we give space without stopping to think about what we are losing, the quality of time and communication with those we love.

“There are non-negotiable truths that sometimes, unfortunately, we learn after a loss. Any other learning will depend on the process of each person within the family system,” she said.
