Greenpeace: Chile will hand over the presidency of the COP with the Dominga environmental conflict underway

As of this Sunday, October 31 and until November 12, the United Nations Conference on Climate Change COP26 will take place in Glasgow, United Kingdom, where it is intended to advance in the pending of the COP25 that Chile presided, although made in Madrid.

From Greenpeace they acknowledge that Chile “updated” its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and that it will present its Long-Term Climate Strategy in Glasgow, however, they assure that “validating the mining project like Dominga, as Chile is doing, represents what worst climate hypocrisy because it involves destroying a unique biodiversity of penguins, whales, chungungos and unique species that are already threatened by climate change. For this reason we emphasize that in this Cop 26 our country gives clear signals and invalidates this nefarious project to our goals”.

And they argue that according to the Climate Action Tracker evaluation, Chile’s NDC updated to 2020 is insufficient to have a temperature increase of only 1.5 ° C, and it is most likely that it will increase by 2 ° C or 3 ° C, “What would be a disaster.”

Estefanía González, Greenpeace Campaigns Coordinator, who is in Glasgow participating in this summit, emphasizes that: this is “perhaps the last opportunity to advance towards a climate ambition (…) to maintain the 1.5 ° C increase it is due abandon the use of coal and switch to 100% renewable energy to stop depending on fossil fuels ”.

The spokeswoman added that Chile “must now close the thermoelectric plants that turned Quintero and Puchuncaví into a sacrifice zone, among other locations, and not continue to poison their inhabitants until 2040.”

González describes as inconsistent with the serious water crisis that is being experienced, “having a watershed management plan by 2030, while water rights are over granted up to three times the average in the country. We must recover water as a common good and a human right “.

Greenpeace also criticized the absence of measures to protect forests and native vegetation, salt flats, peatlands, glaciers, rivers, aquifers and lakes – “essential to take care of water and face Climate Change” – and that instead it is proposed to strengthen the forestry industry.

But the government’s biggest contradiction is not only presenting insufficient proposals at COP 26, but also while trying to build the Dominga port mining project in the middle of a Nature Sanctuary, “it’s like installing a disco in a nursery.”

Finally, González points out that the new Constitution “must take charge of the climate crisis scenario, recover common goods, protect ecosystems and rebuild the balance with nature in order to have a fair and equitable development.”
