A green memorial, with 100 seedlings of trees native to the Atlantic Forest, was inaugurated today (12) in a protected area of the Cantareira System, in Nazaré Paulista (SP), to honor the victims of the covid-19 pandemic in Brazil. Exactly two years ago, the first death from the disease in the country was recorded – a 57-year-old woman in São Paulo.
The memorial is an initiative, in Brazil, of non-governmental organizations Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas (Ipê), Catalyst2030, Rede Folha de Empreendedores Socioambientais, Ashoka, Em Luta, in support of the global movement Healing Trees – a proposal by the San Ramon Carbon Neutral foundation. that intends to plant more than five million trees, in memory of every person who lost their life to disease in the world.
“This is the way we found to honor the people who passed away because of the pandemic and also to be in solidarity with the pain of everyone who has lost someone. It is a way of helping to regenerate life on the planet and reaffirming that it is our right to have a balanced environment. We are experiencing a moment of great challenge, as environmental degradation has led to an unprecedented imbalance, and the pandemic is a great example of this”, highlighted the president of Ipê, Suzana Padua.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Brazil has registered 29,305,114 confirmed cases of covid-19, according to the epidemiological bulletin released on Friday (11) by the Ministry of Health. The total number of deaths from the disease is 654,556.
