Grecia Quiroz, widow of Carlos Manzo, will be the mayor of Uruapan

Grecia Quiroz, widow of Carlos Manzo, is proposed for mayor of Uruapan

The Congress of Michoacán accepted the proposal for Quiroz to be the next mayor.

Who is Grecia Quiroz?

Just six months ago, in April, Grecia Quiroz took over as honorary president of the DIF Uruapan, with the commitment to strengthen said institution and be at the service of the most vulnerable sectors.

At his inauguration, he recognized the institution’s material shortcomings, but stated that he was confident that with effort and teamwork they could be overcome.

This Tuesday, the Uruapan Council presented the formal proposal to the Michoacán Congress for Quiroz to be elected as the alternate municipal president.

“The proposal concerns the citizen of Grecia Itzel Quiroz García, which was formalized through an official letter by the independent deputy Carlos Alejandro Bautista Tafolla, where he requests that it be submitted to the plenary for consideration,” the Congress of Michoacán reported in a statement before voting to approve her as the new mayor.

In addition to her experience at the head of the municipal DIF, Grecia Quiroz aspired in 2024 to a local council for district 20 of Uruapan, nominated as an independent candidate by the civil association Mujeres Empoderando Uruapan, a candidacy from which she resigned in January 2025.

“They turned off his voice, not his fight”

In the midst of mourning the murder of Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, the mayor’s wife has transformed her pain into a speech of resistance. During the posthumous tribute held in the municipality, Quiroz García took the stage to address hundreds of citizens and made it clear that her husband’s legacy will not end with his death.

Grecia Quiroz affirmed that the legacy of her husband Carlos Manzo will remain, as well as his fight against organized crime.

“Today they did not kill the president of Uruapan, they killed the best (municipal) president in Mexico, the only one who dared to raise his voice, who dared to debate, to speak the truth, to always tell the truth, without fear of anything.

“As his brother said so well: although they turned off his voice, they will not turn off this fight, they will not turn it off because we will continue his legacy,” he said.

Quiroz García, who is a mother of two children, also addressed a call to families. “To all who are here, educate your children. Love them. And if they go down the wrong path, correct them. And if it is necessary to put them in jail yourselves, do it. As he himself said: it is better to go see them in jail than to cry for them in the pantheon,” he emphasized.

She also insisted that her husband’s voice will continue to resonate through her people, the town of Uruapan, who are tired of so much violence that ends up taking away their children, brothers, parents and children.

“Today I have and we have that legacy of continuing to support Uruapan because this independent government will continue to support the most vulnerable sector. We will continue to support everyone who needs it and today I tell the people of Uruapan that we do not give up, that we unite, that we rise up as he would have liked, that we fight, that we defend our children tooth and nail,” he said.
