MIAMI, United States. — Despite the fact that the propaganda of the Castro regime has monopolized the date of the July 26that day is also celebrated in Cuba as Grandparents’ Day.

The origin of Grandparents’ Day is related to Catholic saints and to the religious conventions established by the Church. In this sense, the date pays homage to Santa Ana and San Joaquín, parents of the Virgin Mary and grandparents of Jesus Christ.

Although in several countries there are dates to pay tribute to the elderly —including the International Day of Older Persons (October 1) — Only eight celebrate Grandparents’ Day: Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Nicaragua, Honduras, Panama, Venezuela and Cuba.

Various bibliographical references indicate that Spain is precisely one of the countries where the date acquires greater connotation. There, it was the non-governmental organization Messengers of Peace that promoted the festival for the first time in 1998.

In the case of the Caribbean island, the date began to be celebrated last year, so not many Cubans know about it.

In the midst of the celebration of the so-called National Rebellion Day, the official press has hardly echoed Grandparents’ Day. The only reference appears on the portal Cubahoraand links the aforementioned date to the assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks.

The scheme is recorded to date

The official media took advantage of the occasion to review the career of Julio López Granado, an octogenarian combatant of the Rebel Army, who was under the command of Fidel Castro in the Sierra Maestra.

“My grandfather’s revolutionary trajectory is incomparable. From his childhood to the present day, he continues to fight against the wrong done, with his advanced age helping the Association of Combatants and managing solutions that nobody wants to be the protagonist. It is the hand that everyone hopes will be raised in a meeting to raise a problem that affects many, but there is little courage to raise it, ”his grandson, Carlos Alberto Carvajal López, told Cubahora.

It should be noted that, worldwide, October 1 is celebrated as the International Day of Older Persons. The date was promoted by the UN with the aim of raising awareness against discrimination against the elderly, drawing attention to negative stereotypes and false ideas about aging.
