CDMX, Mexico.- Given the current economic crisis and the deep food shortagewith only two eggs, the Cuban grandmother Olga Ricardo Tonezt cooked each one of the panetelas that she started to make a 15-year-old cake for her granddaughter.
The Cuban resident of Pinar del Río published the photos of the sweet together with the teenager in a Facebook group called Recipes from the heart. This virtual space is used by Cuban mothers to share their culinary solutions with others in the face of the lack of resources on the island.
“Today my granddaughter is turning 15 and I tried to make her panetelas with all my grandmother’s love, with two eggs each, because I don’t eat eggs because I live in the country,” the woman wrote.
Olga Ricardo also mentioned that the high prices of eggs as well as their scarcity influenced the fact that she could only use two for each piece of candy. “They are quite expensive and you have to save,” she confessed.
In addition to the photos, the grandmother left the step-by-step recipe of how she did it, to guide other families in the same situation.
The last December our medium published that the hardships of the booths (state butcher shops) have reached such an extreme that the booths, as they are popularly called, hang posters to avoid the constant questions of their customers.
“There are no eggs and I don’t know where they are” is the emphatic advertisement that has been posted in one of these establishments.
The production of the demanded food has fallen drastically. Only five monthly units are sold per consumer, controlled through the ration book.
Today putting food on the table is quite a feat in Cuba. Especially for those who do not have the required currencies in MLC stores. The spaces where they sell the little they sell in the country.
