Tragedy has struck the community of Santander with the confirmation of the death of Georgina León, a 72-year-old woman who had been kidnapped on August 27 in the municipality of Charalá.

The victim’s decomposing remains were found Tuesday in the Los Micos area in the municipality of Encino, according to retired General Oscar Hernandez, Secretary of Government.

Georgina León was identified thanks to the clothing she was wearing when she was kidnapped by a group of armed men.

The kidnappers broke into the farm where she lived, gagging her and threatening her and her husband.

After leaving the man tied up in the middle of a road, they fled with the victim, demanding a ransom of 500 million pesos for his release.

The gruesome discovery of her body has caused deep consternation in the region, which has expressed solidarity with the family of the deceased.
