Governor of Arica and Parinacota urged the Government to "give a sign of governability in recent weeks" in the face of the migration crisis

The migratory crisis that the north of our country is experiencing has caused the Government to make the decision to decree a state of emergency for four provinces, in order to combat the insecurity that exists in the area.

Although this measure was applauded by many sectors, not all are satisfied with the actions of the administration headed by President Sebastián Piñera. One of the critics is the governor of the Arica and Parinacota region, Jorge Díaz, who in an interview with CNN chili described the measure as insufficient.

“The number of troops is insufficient compared to the number of migratory waves that enter the country. Now it is also necessary to ask the way in which the reconduction is being carried out. In the case of my region, in yesterday’s report there were already 80 people who had entered through unauthorized steps on the border with Peru,” said the regional authority.

Along the same lines, he accused the null existence of a selectivity in the migration process. “All the people who want to enter through irregular steps have done so during all these two years of the pandemic. That is why this crisis has deepened the way it has been,” he maintained.

“The truth is that obviously the border had to be protected, I think that today the lack of control that has existed during all this time has caused this crisis to be very deep, and perhaps never seen before. And obviously, with 15 days of State of Exception, such a serious immigration problem is not going to be solved, ”he added.

In addition, he criticized the Government’s slow reaction to the problems affecting the north. “It is very important that the Undersecretary of the Interior be present in all the northern regions of the country where this State of Exception is decreed. That is very important because it is the only way that decisions are made from the territories. They cannot be taken 2 thousand kilometers from where the problem is, ”he assured.

“I think it was very necessary to give a sign of governability, even in these last weeks of government, in the face of misgovernment that has been away from any solution on migration issues for a long time,” he concluded.
