Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) is carrying out a series of tests with dynamic waters, so that the first two units of Hidroituango start operating before November 30, the deadline to fulfill the commitment acquired in the auction of charge for reliability made by the Energy and Gas Regulatory Commission (Creg). In the event that it does not come into operation before that day, EPM may be exposed to the execution of the guarantees of the reliability charge.

Faced with this possibility, the Governor of Antioquia, Aníbal Gaviria, sent a letter to President Gustavo Petro, so that, through the position held by the National Government in the Creg, “It is managed before that entity that the entry into operation of Hidroituango can be carried out in a reasonable period that allows the performance of required tests”.
“That requirement, at this time, I believe can and should be removed. In effect, starting operations on November 30 or a close date is not going to affect the country’s energy system, especially at this time when all the reservoirs are filled by the La Niña phenomenon,” says the letter sent to the head of government.

Regarding the possible start of operations on November 15, as EPM has said, in case the tests are carried out successfully, Gaviria pointed out: “It would be extraordinary if you can enter before November 30, but the same EPM manager (Jorge Carillo) has said that additional tests would have to be done.”

Given the deadline requested by the governor, He clarified that this would be adjusted to the term that Hidroituango needs to carry out all the tests that guarantee the safety of the project and the communities downstream.

In addition, the governor clarified that he had no conversations with EPM to make the request to President Petro.
